Keystone® Latch - 2-Sided (KLADV-M2, KLADV-P2, KLADV2-P2)

1) Issue: The latch locks/unlocks on one side but the key doesn’t turn enough to lock/unlock on the other side. You will need to reverse the button side cylinder spindle. See the Troubleshooting section in the instructions for details.

2) Issue: The latch locks/unlocks on the latch side but the key just spins on the button side. The key cylinder spindle was cut to a length that is too short

3) Issue: The latch doesn’t go all the way down. The button spindle is too long. See the instructions, and cut the spindle to the appropriate length.

4) Issue: The button doesn’t lift the latch. The button spindle was cut to a length that is too short.

5) Issue: The latch won’t lock. Turning the key pulls the gravity latch up. The button spindle is too long. See the instructions, and cut the spindle to the appropriate length.

6) Can I rekey it? Yes.

Trident™ Latch (TRIDENT10, TRIDENT20)

2) Issue: Can I rekey it? No.

Ornamag® Latch (OM)

1) Issue: The handle doesn’t return to the proper position. The spindle was used to turn the internal spring bushing at assembly, causing misalignment of the spring bushing. Review step 2 of the instructions, and then proceed with the following steps:

a. From the back side of the latch assembly, remove the set screw in the handle, and remove the handle from the square spindle.

c. From the back side of the latch assembly, insert the spindle to a depth of 2.25”, and rotate the handle until the spring bushing clicks into place. Remove the handle with the attached spindle.

d. From the front side of the latch assembly, fully insert the spindle with the attached handle. Attach the other handle at the opposite end of the spindle with the set screw.

2) Issue: The latch can release the striker when locked. In rare instances, if the handle is forced downward when locked, the locking tab on the cylinder can bend.

Spring-Loaded Gate Wheels (GW1, GW2, GW3)

1) How much weight can the gate wheels handle? This product is designed to be used in an application in which the weight of the gate is supported by the hinges, with the gate wheel helping to minimize gate sag and allow engagement of the latch. When used as intended, the gate wheel will only be subject to a minor portion of the gate weight. In cases where the wheel spring is fully compressed, the wheel would perform as a springless gate wheel, and the spring rating should not come into play.

Nautilus® Hinges (NTLS)

1) Can these be used on vinyl or wood gates? The intended application for these hinges is for ornamental gates, but they may be used on vinyl or wood gates within the weight limit of the hinges. In vinyl gate applications, post stiffeners must be used.

Shotgun® Gate Closer (SHOTGUN)

1) How far can the gate be opened when using the closer? The gate can be opened up to 90 degrees when using the closer. A stop must be used to keep the gate from opening more than 90 degrees and causing damage to the closer.

General Patio Product Questions:

Note: The information below applies only to lightweight Florida-style aluminum screen doors that are primarily used in swimming pool screen enclosures and lanais. Our closers are not designed for heavy screen doors or storm doors commonly used in more northern climates.

Why does my screen door slam so quickly?

Periodic adjustment of the closer tube may be required due to use and environmental temperature fluctuations. The closing speed can be adjusted using the small vent hole screw located at the end of the closer tube. Turn the screw clockwise to decrease the closing speed, or turn the screw counterclockwise to increase the closing speed.

Why does my screen door get stuck in the open position?

The following are a few issues that may prevent a closer tube from functioning properly:

  • The closer tube has experienced heavy water exposure, possibly from rain, an overflowing rain gutter, a hose, or a pressure washer. If a significant amount of water gets in the tube, the water can block or corrode the moving parts.
  • Hard opening of the door beyond 90 degrees has impacted the integrity of the closer tube and potentially caused the internal spring to completely disengage. When using the hold-open ring on the closer, make sure you disengage it after use, as a gust of wind may cause a hard opening and damage the closer. A check chain can be purchased and installed at the top of the door to prevent hard and wide openings.
  • The internal spring of the closer is pre-lubricated to minimize possible corrosion, but more lubrication may be required over time. Once a year, a few drops of additional lubrication can be injected into the hole where the rod is exposed to help deter corrosion. After adding lubrication, open and close the door several times to help disperse the lubrication throughout the spring.
How long will my closer last?

Closer tubes are designed and tested to 100,000 cycles. Actual life will vary depending on environmental conditions.

What should I do if my door is only a few months old and I am still having problems after adjusting the vent hole screw?

Please contact the screen enclosure installer so they can check for proper installation and replace the tube if needed.

Website Questions:

Where can I order patio parts from? Is Home Depot my only option? I called, and they don’t have this part.

Homeowners can purchase patio closer replacement parts from the Home Depot website under the Barton Kramer brand. Some Home Depot stores and most (but not all) Ace Hardware stores in Florida will have inventory in the window hardware aisle.
